Extending Run Time of the 1609-D UPS

Bulletin 1609 UPS Products: Benefits, Differences, Features between Double Conversion Online and Line Interactive UPS products

Bulletin 1609 uninterruptible power supplies are designed specifically for industrial applications. They meet worldwide industrial and general purpose application requirements up to 10 kVA. These units are globally certified to provide backup AC power to bridge dips, sags, or brief line power losses.

The 1609-B and 1609-D are Line Interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) products. A true online, Double Conversion UPS is normally reserved for the higher power units greater than 1500VA such as the bulletin 1609-P series.

The 1609-D UPS can be extended per the run time charts. The 1609-EXBAT External Battery Pack and quantity of 6 batteries (1609-SBAT or 1609-HBAT) each will be required to extend the run time.

1609-B Industrial Uninterruptible Power Supplies

The run time of the 1609-B Industrial UPS is not able to be extended.  Below are the expected run time charts for both the 1609-B normal battery UPS, and the high temperature battery option.

1609-D Industrial Networking Uninterruptible Power Supplies

When an extended run time is needed beyond what the 1609-B or 1609-D can provide,  the 1609-EXBAT external battery housing can be added.  Note that only the 1609-D Industrial UPS can be extended with the addition of the 1609-EXBAT.  Each 1609-EXBAT external battery housing requires six (6) batteries (either the normal temperature or high temperature battery).

The input voltage does not affect the runtime listed in the charts below, so the runtime charts can be used for both 120V and 230V UPS units.

Additional Information About 1609 Batteries

  • The 1609-B and 1609-D UPS units are not supplied with batteries.
  • To obtain a functional 1609-B and 1609-D UPS unit also order: 1609-SBAT (40 Deg C) battery or 1609-HBAT (50 Deg C) battery.
  • 1609-B product requires two batteries (no separate battery housing is needed).
  • 1609-D product requires three batteries (no separate battery housing is needed).
  • The External Battery Pack (1609-EXBAT) that can be used with the 1609-D UPS requires six batteries.  These six batteries would need to be purchased separately as they are not supplied with the part number 1609-EXBAT.

What’s the difference between Line Interactive and Double Conversion Online?

Line Interactive Topology

This design uses a bi-directional inverter to charge the battery while 120V power is present.  This is an extremely efficient design, which uses less than 10% capacity of UPS and operates at 96% efficiency.  This design results in extended battery life.  The Line Interactive topology also provides power conditioning features such as noise filtering and active voltage regulation.

Double Conversion Online Topology

In this design, the inverter is connected in series and is converting power constantly providing zero transfer time to battery.  First, the power is rectified to DC to charge the battery, then it is inverted back to AC for the output power. Online Technology does provide optimal voltage regulation at the sacrifice of lower efficiency, lower battery life and increased heat generation.

Which Design to Choose for PLCs, Industrial Computers and PanelView Products

Zero transfer time does not offer any advantages when using a UPS on PLCs, Industrial Computers, and PanelView products.  This is because these products are supplied with switched mode power supplies and the power supply must meet international standards that regulate the ride through time of the Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS).  The ride-thru time of the SMPS is much greater than the transfer time of a Line Interactive UPS.
